FOUNDER + DRUMS
Shlomo Recu founded the Recu Jazz Ensemble in 2012 out of a love for music and live performance.
The band is the ultimate fusion of all Shlomo’s interests: jazz, performance, and hasidic tradition. By combining his spiritual affiliation with his passion for jazz, Shlomo paved the way for a unique space in New York’s live music industry.
His twenty-plus years of experience learning, teaching, and performing music have given Shlomo the expertise to offer custom-built bands and packages suited to each client’s needs.
Shlomo’s greatest joy is playing soulful music that captures both the ear and the heart. His goal is to share that joy with his audience. His passion, energy, and vivacity are evident in every show he plays.
Shlomo studied music at the City College of New York, The New School, and Israel’s Rimon School of Jazz & Contemporary Music. He has learned from and practiced with the likes of John Patitucci, Reggie Workman, and Mike Holober. Shlomo also studied drums with masters such as John Riley, Jeff Hirschfield, and Ahara’le Kaminsky.
Aside from his performances with the ensemble, Shlomo also works as a freelance drummer, drumming instructor, and music teacher, and has directed music programs for various Jewish day schools.
Shlomo sees a deep message and G-dly connection in hasidic melody that he believes hasn't yet penetrated contemporary jazz culture. His personal mission is to bring this more esoteric music into the world of professional jazz.
